April 10, 2006I'm trying to figure out what pulley/belt configuration to run in the drag car. There will be no power steering, smog pump, or AC compressor. The car will only have a water pump, alternator, and crank pulley. I had a friend tell me to run an old LTD alternator bracket, which moves the alternator to the driver side, but I would rather not re-wire it for that side. I guess I'm thinking about this too much. Any ideas would be much appreciated.

April 10, 2006I'd swap out the reverse rotation water pump that you have, and put in a standard rotation water pump (from a mid-60's to early 80's anything-with-a-302-or-5.0L - try a '80 Mustang or something).
That way, the belt will go around both the crank and the water pump, turning them the same direction, instead of making an 'S' shape between them and rotating the water pump in the reverse direction. You can use your same pulley on the water pump.
Then, just use the alternator to adjust tension by moving it a little closer or farther (I seem to remember my Fox Body allowing that - if yours doesn't, you could notch one of the mounting points or get a bracket off something older to make one bolt on the alternator adjustable, to tighten the belt).
