September 1, 2006My car won't Idle. I will start up leave and when I try to stop it cuts of if I don't keep my foot on the gas.I figured I cleaned out the EGR and IAC valves and the Mass Air Sensor and while it did get better or so it seamed when I tried to pull into my driveway (cut the wheels hard plus going up and incline) it stalled again and then it is very hard to start any ideas?
September 2, 2006It's possible that you have a vacuum leak. I'd expect it to be a pretty big one from the can't idle situation.
September 2, 2006havent been tacing it have you Charles you might have burned some valves
September 2, 2006Mine likes to stall when I am coming to a stop as well. I haven't figured out what it is yet. It also idles rough. I cleaned the TB and have ran some Seafoam through it but still does it. Has done it since I got it about 5 months ago.
September 6, 2006ive heard of similar things in other cars. the vacuum leak sounds like a good starting point, also check your plugs, might be worn down badly, (not that that would completly cause it, but it could contribute if the gap is too big)
September 7, 2006Yea, I definately need to change the plugs. Got 120k and I am sure the previous owner didn't change them so they are past their prime.
September 7, 2006When my 87 does this, I normally check the TPS. It usually has spun and is reading wrong, which causes it to die. If I adjust it to where it is supposed to be, then it works....
But mine also only dies every now and then, not all the time. Sometimes it will run perfect, other times it won't......
September 7, 2006Also, there is something in the 4.6L 4V cobra engines intakes that have to be cleaned/replaced. You have to take the intake off to do it. I can't remember what it's called, but you may look into it.
September 7, 2006Stalling when coming to a stop is usually either the IAC or EGR. On my '94 this sort of behavior has been EGR everytime.
So, I take the EGR valve off the car, clean it with warm sudsy water and an old toothbrush, put it back together, and I'm good for a few more years!
September 7, 2006EGR on my car is there, but nothing is hooked up.....
September 7, 2006Having no EGR function will not cause the problem (so, your car should coast at idle just fine).
Having a dirty EGR valve that gets stuck open sometimes causes the problem. Then you have lots of exhaust re-entering the intake, with the throttle closed, and the fuel injectors practically off (idle), which makes for a very lean condition - this usually causes a brief stumble and stall as you let off the gas. You will hear the stumble first, before this problem gets too far along. Eventually it'll start stalling.
