August 17, 2007I'm pretty sure its not possible. A 351M is closer to a 351 Cleveland. Um but may I ask, what your using a 351M in?
August 19, 2007I'll have to go look into this... but I thought a 351M was a destroked 360 or something (FE family), with Cleveland heads or something like that. It was always an odd combo.
Bottom line is you need to find out which BLOCK you have. That will dictate which cam family you need.
August 19, 2007I'm pretty sure the 351M wasn't in the FE family. I think its an off motor of the 351C. Also I know that its pretty high on the ford "forget" list. Which is why I was wondering about what its going in.
August 19, 2007From my favorite Ford guru, Dave Williams' site:
The 351M and 400 (Ford doesn't call it the M) *are* Clevelands, at least
according to Ford. They're high-deck 351C-4Vs with larger main bearing
diameters. The bellhousing bolt patterns are the same as the 429/460, but
they bolt in on Cleveland mounts, the heads are exactly identical to the
Cleveland, timing chains, water pumps, oil pans, and assorted odds and ends
are all the same as the Cleveland.
In another place...
A 351M is a weird duck. It's a 351C-2V with the same deck height as a 429
(which makes it as large as a 429), 351W sized main bearings, and 6.58 inch
long rods. For all practical purposes it's a bigger, heavier 351C-2V with
long rods. The 400 is the same engine, except with a 4 inch stroke instead
of 3.5 inch. Ford didn't even bother to discriminate between the 351M and
400 in some cases; even the EPA smog stickers would say "351M/400".
So, I think it's a destroked 400. But, it sounds like a Cleveland cam would work.

August 20, 2007A friend of mine gave me this motor. He thought it was a 351W, he's a mopar guy what does he know!! I have a lot of extra parts for a 351W but not a 351M. I was going to put it in a 1980 Mercury Bobcat. But I think that I may just try and see if I can find anyone that would be willing to trade for a 302 or 351W. Thanks for all your help Guys
