May 26, 2006iam looking at a electric green cobra and the owner put a blue sparkle clearcoat over it. It looks pretty nice but on the passenger door right below the window the clear coat is peeling down right were the door meets the black rubber. Its obout 2 in long right below rubber. It also has a little spot peeling right on the front edge of the hood. He is asking 12000 with 71000 miles. What do you guys think about the peeling?
May 26, 2006I think that you'll find it pretty much impossible to match the clearcoat, and that tinted clear is also a recipe for a difficult paintjob to maintain (if you buff it it gets thinner, and the color appears different).
May 26, 2006I guess one could look at it two ways....at least.
Maybe it's a localized problem and there was hand oil or some impurity in that particular spot and it's the only place where you'll have a problem.
The whole car might peel!
Edit: I'd pass too!
May 26, 2006Not unless you want to repaint it. from my experience peeling clear is due to poor prep.
To get it painted and make sure no more paint would peel they would want to take all the old stuff off.
If it is peeling by the edge it is from masking around stuff this causes week spots.
May 26, 2006so do think it is gonna keep peeling from what i explained. and would would be possible to just put a clear coat over that with right prep
May 26, 2006There is NO WAY to know if it will continue peeling. Odds are it will.
Another clear coat over that one? You'd pretty much have to sand the entire car and get all the clear coat off (down to the paint) and then reshoot it.
If the current coat isn't sticking, nothing you put on top of it is going to stick. Period.
Like trying to put a wet piece of tape on an oiled teflon pan.
May 26, 2006About how much would it cost to strip the clear coat down to the paint and then re shoot it with clear coat.
May 26, 2006That's almost impossible to tell.
It would be difficult it not impossible to strip JUST the clearcoat and not hurt the paint beneath. There may have been an improper preparation after paint and before clear. They may have used an incompatible clear over the paint. There's no way to know how much work needs to be done and that means no way of estimating the cost.
Buy it if you don't mind eventually putting an 8-10 thousand dollar paint job on it later.
Put a piece of masking tape on the area thats peeling and lift it off and see if a big chunk of clear coat comes off.
Do this at your own risk. The seller probably would want to kill you after that.
May 26, 2006Thanks for your advice, i would probally be better off just spending more and keep looking
May 26, 2006What is your absolute limit on what you want to spend on buying a Mustang?
