November 20, 2007So I'm just wondering if anyone has had trouble with the CHP harassing them about different aftermarket mods on their cars? My car is no way legal in california but is legal in washington (some places) were I moved from and and plan to move back. I've stopped driving my car almost alltogether because I'm afraid of getting pulled over and them towing my car. Anyone know the rules on out of state cars and temporary residence with modified cars? Thanks

November 20, 2007You're a resident after 10 days or something, aren't you? The time limit before you're supposed to have your California papers on the car is pretty short.
That said, if your car is 'in no way legal' here, I'd just register it at a family member's house in Washington.
In general I haven't had trouble with the CHP (highway and freeway patrol - not usually in cities - that's Sheriff or city Police Dept). I've heard about people being hassled for tint, or front plates, or not having reflectors in their Altezza style taillamp housings. As far as I can tell, if you look like you're older than 30, and you're not driving like you're 16, they won't even hassle you with those things.
I used to worry about aftermarket exhaust, since there's officially a noise limit. But I've never been hassled, nor have I heard of anybody I know getting hassled for that.
November 21, 2007Ok, so both my cars are already registered under my dads name back home. So think I'll be ok with keeping the plates on them untill I move back to washington?
I've always been a pretty responsible driver so I don't worry too much about that unless the cop just wants to profile a 20 year old.
November 21, 2007If you're stopped, just remember to be clear that it's your dad's car, and not yours. Then the out of state registration is legit. I'm not sure how your insurance works in that situation however - best to talk to your insurance agent.
If it's your car, and you're a CA resident, then you need to put the plate/registration in your name - and a police officer will write you an extra violation for not doing so if you are stopped and you can't explain why you have Washington plates. (See above explanation!).
What things about the car are illegal in CA?
November 21, 2007Well the cars built primarily to race I just still have plates on it by luck. Considering its a road race/autocross car it's still streetable. But the engine is completely illegal in ca and being caged and having straight exhaust are other problems. I'm just really relying on my wa plates to keep it drivable.
November 21, 2007What state is your drivers lic. ?
November 21, 2007Washington, I don't plan on switching that either until I completely have to.
November 21, 2007The prob is movies like 2 Fast 2 Furious... even buddies of mine who work for CHP say there always told to crack down after these movies come out... Thank the producers for killing it for the sports cars!
Also Sacramento area has always been known for stricked chippies.
